PARIS — Defending Olympic champion Kelsey Mitchell has withdrawn from the Paris Olympics.
The 30-year-old from Sherwood Park, Alta., was swept by Germany’s Lea Friedrich in the women’s sprint track cycling quarterfinals at the National Velodrome on Saturday. Friedrich won the first race by 0.217 seconds and the second by 0.052 seconds.

Mitchell lost to New Zealand’s Ellesse Andrew in the round of 16 that day, but then won her preliminary round in the repechage to advance.

Canada finished second-to-last in the men’s Madison on Saturday. Portugal took the gold medal with 55 points, ahead of Italy (47) and Denmark (41) in the 15-nation competition.
Three Canadian athletes competed on the track on Sunday, the final day of the Paris Olympics.
Maggie Coles-Lyster of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, competed in the women’s all-around, while James Hedgcock of Ancaster, Ont., and Nick Wammes of Bothwell, Ont., competed in the men’s keirin.
