The Ministry of Justice is the winner of the 2024 Public Sector Debate Competition.
The five-member team defeated the Administrative General Department (AGD) team in the final held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in New Kingston on Wednesday (August 7) to take home the championship trophy and prizes valued at more than $800,000, including a $500,000 cash prize and individual trophies.
Each member of the AGD team received a trophy and $567,500 in prize money, including a $375,000 cash prize, for their second-place finish.
In the third place match held on the same day, the Teaching Services team defeated the Ministry of Education and Youth (MOEY) team.
Members of the Teaching Services team received a trophy and a $250,000 cash prize, while the Department of Education received a fourth-place prize of $170,000.
Several partial awards were also presented.
The Most Valuable Debater Award went to Peyton Patterson of the Ministry of Justice, who was named the best debater three times in the competition. In addition to the cash award, Mr. Patterson will also be a member of the Jamaican delegation to the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The Best Speaker award in the final was presented to Joanalee Robertson from the Department of Justice, while Tevin Cameron from the Department of Teaching Services was named Best Speaker in the third place round.
The Development Bank of Jamaica (AGD) won the Most Improved Team and Best Teamwork awards; the Instructional Services Department was named the Most Engaged Team; the Ministry of Education (MOEY) won the online Fan Favourite competition, while the Development Bank of Jamaica (DBJ) won the Early Bird Award for being the first team to register for the competition.
This year’s competition saw a surge in interest, with a record number of 26 teams participating, reflecting the growing enthusiasm for the initiative.
Each participating team received gifts and certificates, and eight teams that have participated in the competition since its inaugural event in 2019 received special recognition.
The competition, which is in its third year, is organised by the Transformation Implementation Unit (TIU) in partnership with the Jamaica Association for Debate and Empowerment (JADE).
It aims to provide a platform for government officials to share their views, stimulate a spirit of participation and make public sector transformation more inclusive.
