The Ministry of Information, Communications and Technology (ICT) held a two-day workshop with senators, congressmen and representatives of broadcasting, information and regulatory agencies.
Representatives from agencies such as the Swaziland Broadcasting and Information Service (EBIS) and the Swaziland Television Authority (Eswatini TV) had the opportunity to brief the distinguished guests on the profile of their respective agencies, their challenges, strategies and objectives. This was followed by a dialogue between the speakers by Senators and Members of Parliament (members of the Portfolio Committee of the Ministry of ICT). They used the opportunity to raise suggestions and questions, which were also answered by the Minister of ICT and the Chief Secretary.
The Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Her Excellency Savannah Maziya, said duties must be performed honorably and with the best interests of the nation at the forefront. She said this was a key building block in building a better future for Swaziland, stressing that leadership positions should not be exploited for personal gain.
The Minister expressed the Ministry’s vision to promote urban development. She spoke about the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Taiwan to implement a 5G network in Swaziland within 18 months. She mentioned that Mbabane will be the first beneficiary of this initiative, with plans to roll it out across the country in the future. Maziya further mentioned the construction of two computer labs for local schools equipped with 70 computers and the continuous efforts to promote so-called STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education through outreach programmes, demonstrating the Ministry’s commitment to promoting technical education in Swaziland.
The Ministry’s goal is to not only compete with international television and radio stations, but to become a competitor. To this end, Maziya highlighted some notable achievements, including the rehabilitation of four transmitters by the Swaziland Post and Telecommunications Authority, which has enabled radio access in areas such as Ntontondozi, Hlatsikhulu, Siteki, and other areas where transmitters have been installed. She also mentioned the provision of broadcasting equipment to Swaziland Television, which has further strengthened the capacity of various departments within the Ministry.
Mr. Mlamuli Dlamini, CEO of Swaziland Television, said that television plays an important role in shaping the image of a country and that Swaziland Television is eager to develop in tandem with the Ministry to meet international standards. He said: “Around the world, television is a major driver of economic development. Our goal is to tell ‘our story’ and bring the hearts of the people of Swaziland back to local broadcasting. We believe that the Honourable Minister’s initiative to bring the key players together is a big step towards success.”
