A Juba court on Wednesday adjourned the hearing of a defamation case filed by the state General Education Minister, Awut Deng Achuil, to August 5.

On Wednesday, the investigator who filed the case was questioned by prosecutors and defence lawyers, and then cross-examined by presiding judge Lual Chuei.

Last October, the Supreme Court referred the case against three youths from Luanjang community in East Tonj County, Warrap State, to the Juba County Court.

In February 2021, a group of Luanjang community youths represented by interim president Marcelo Deng Magon wrote to President Salva Kiir, accusing the minister of using insecurity as an excuse to ban eighth grade primary school students in parts of East Tonj County from sitting for their 2021 final exams.

In February 2022, the minister then filed a case in the Juba court against Machiek Dongrin, Marcelo Deng Magon and Tinjok Ruben Dhal, a medical student at Balghazal University.

After the hearing, the minister’s lawyer Monyluak Alor Kuol told reporters that his client believed the information shared on social media had harmed his character and therefore chose to file a lawsuit for defamation.

“The abuse hurt the minister, so she decided to go to court to clear her name,” Kuhl said.

He said the complainants are expected to appear in court to present their case during the next court session.

“We have concluded this meeting now and the investigator has closed his file. The next meeting will be before the court to hear the complaint and someone will represent the ministry, which is the first complainant and the minister will become the second complainant because of the personal insults he received,” Kuehl said.
