Minister Setiadi praises GAMKI for joining the drive to eradicate online gambling

JAKARTA (ANTARA) – Minister of Communications and Informatics (Kominfo) Budi Arie Setiadi praised the Indonesian Christian Youth Movement (GAMKI) for its active role in helping the government combat online gambling.

Setiadi, who received GAMKI representatives at the Kominfo Ministry’s office in Jakarta, Friday (July 26), stressed that youth organizations can play an important role in conveying information about the threat of online gambling to Indonesian teenagers.

“We all agree that the threat of online gambling is growing and has become a serious problem that we need to solve together,” he noted in a Kominfo ministry press release received on Saturday.

The minister also expressed optimism about the youth organization’s ability to make a significant contribution to protecting Indonesian youth from the adverse effects of online gambling.

“GAMKI can serve as a pioneer in educating young people about the dangers of online gambling,” he said.

Meanwhile, GAMKI Central Committee Chairman Sahat Martin Philip Sinurat stressed that his group has been working hard to improve people’s digital literacy and encourage Christian youth to prevent and avoid online gambling.

He said the GAMKI programme provides guidance, counselling and support to young people who want to break free from online gambling addiction.

The Indonesian government has taken a series of measures to combat the growing popularity of online gambling in the country, including the establishment of an online gambling eradication task force chaired by Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Hadi Tjahjanto.

In addition, the government has also decided to cut off access to online gambling websites in Cambodia and the Philippines, and to step up efforts to clean up online gambling content in Indonesia’s digital space.

Setiadi previously revealed that his department successfully removed a total of 2,552,749 pieces of online gambling content from July 17, 2023 to July 17, 2024, a threefold increase from the 800,000 removed between 2017 and 2023.
