Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathi received Dr. Nouria Sans, Director of the UNESCO Regional Office in Cairo, and his accompanying delegation at the Ministry’s headquarters offices in the New Administrative Capital to discuss ways to consolidate joint cooperation between the Ministry and the Organization in the field of archaeological work.
The Minister opened the meeting by welcoming Dr. Noria Sans and her accompanying delegation, noting the existing cooperation between Egypt and the UNESCO Regional Office in Cairo, the Organization’s first regional office outside the French capital of Paris.
Bilateral relations
He praised the strong bilateral relations between the two sides in the field of protection of cultural relics and human heritage and expressed full willingness to further strengthen such cooperation in the coming period.
During the meeting, the history of the partnership between Egypt and UNESCO since the beginning of the campaign to save Nubian antiquities in the 1960s was reviewed, and the framework of joint cooperation being developed by the two sides was discussed. department UNESCO Regional Office in Cairo, which includes a project to develop and improve the efficiency of the means of presentation and interpretation of archaeological sites inscribed on the World Heritage List, museums and information signs on archaeological sites, as well as the restoration of the K22 tomb of King Amenhotep III in the Valley of the Kings in Luxor, as well as the restoration of visiting routes in preparation for its opening.
Training courses
Emphasis was also placed on continuing to support the Department’s efforts to focus on the human factor and to develop and build the capacity of its staff through workshops and training courses offered by the UNESCO Office in the area of management. museum There are also archaeological sites.
During the meeting, Fathi stressed that the Egyptian government is keen on preserving its cultural and human heritage, as is evident through the Supreme Committee for the Management of World Heritage, established in 2018 by presidential decree and headed by the Assistant to the President of the Republic for National and Strategic Projects, as well as members of various relevant committees, as this committee follows up on the work being done within the scope of the protection of Egypt’s World Heritage while promoting development work, in line with the national sustainable development strategy “Egypt Vision 2023”, in accordance with UNESCO standards and requirements.
Dr. Nouria Sans expressed the readiness of the UNESCO Regional Office in Cairo to collaborate with the Egyptian Government, represented by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, to provide the necessary technical and technological advice to promote the conservation of Egypt’s archaeological sites, especially those inscribed on the World Heritage List.
The meeting was attended by Yumna Bahar, Deputy Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Dr. Mohammed Ismail Khalid, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, and Ambassador Khaled Talwat, Advisor to the Minister of International Relations and Governor General of the General Department of International Relations and Agreements of the ministry.
