The Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Agio Pereira, represented the Prime Minister, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, in the meeting of the High Defense and Security Council held today, August 9, 2024, at the Nicolás Lobato Presidential Palace. The meeting was chaired by the President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta, and was attended by several government officials and entities related to defense and national security. In addition to the ministers of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Bendito dos Santos Freitas, the Minister of Justice, Sergio de Jesus Fernández da Costa Olnye, and the Minister of the Interior, Francisco da Costa Guterres, were also present. The Chief of Staff of the Timor-Leste Defence Forces (F-FDTL), Lieutenant General Falur Rate Laek, the Commander-in-Chief of the Timor-Leste National Police (PNTL), Henrique da Costa, the Director of the National Intelligence Service (SNI), Longuinhos Monteiro, and two members of the National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs, Defence and Security Committee (Committee B). This is the first time that Justice Minister Sérgio Hornai has attended the High Defense and Security Council since he took office on February 15, 2024.

The meeting discussed security measures during the celebrations and visits of senior dignitaries in August and September to ensure national security and stability.
