The Minister of Justice, Sergio de Jesus Fernández da Costa Oláin, opened the seminar to mark the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. The event, with the theme “Torture and human rights protection in Timor-Leste”, was organized by the National Centre Chega! IP in partnership with the Association of Former Political Prisoners (ASSEPOL/FPPA) and took place on June 25, 2024 in the meeting room of the old Balide district in Dili.
The symposium was held to promote the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, inviting the public to reflect and pay tribute to those who have suffered brutal violence, especially political prisoners in East Timor and around the world. We also sought to share the memory of past torture documented in the Chega report and its recommendations. 
In his speech, the Minister of Justice stressed the urgent need to preserve historical memory and reaffirmed Timor-Leste’s commitment to the International Convention against Torture. He also highlighted the challenges faced from pre-independence to the present day and stressed the fundamental role of the National Chega Centre! as the guardian of the country’s historical memory. 
The seminar also served as a platform for discussing public policies and initiatives aimed at strengthening the judiciary and guaranteeing human rights in the country. The Ministry of Justice reiterated its commitment to promoting a fair and inclusive society where all citizens have access to justice and are protected from any form of inhuman or degrading treatment. 
The event was attended by representatives of government authorities, civil society and non-governmental organizations, who reaffirmed Timor-Leste’s collective commitment to promoting human rights and building a future based on reconciliation and justice.
