June 16, 2024. – Muslims held their annual Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia on the first day of Eid al-Adha. This year’s celebrations were overshadowed by Israel’s genocidal war in the Gaza Strip. Pilgrims expressed solidarity with the residents of Gaza and called for a ceasefire in the Palestinian enclave.
Jordanians turned around and protested after Eid al-Adha prayers in support of Palestinians in Gaza. Protesters waved Palestinian flags and held a sign that read, “There will be no celebrations as long as Gaza is annihilated.” They demanded that the Jordanian government sever ties with Israel.
At the same time, tens of thousands of Syrian people held Eid al-Adha prayers in the capital Damascus, praying to Allah to grant Syria and the brotherly people of Gaza and Palestine great victory.
Last year, Palestinians in Gaza celebrated the Muslim holiday with traditional feasts, family feasts and sharing of meat with the less fortunate, as well as gifts for children. But this year there will be no Eid. After eight months of indiscriminate Israeli attacks, many families will eat canned food in ramshackle tents. There is no meat or live animals in the local markets, and no money to buy snacks or gifts. Instead of celebrating, the region is mired in war, hunger and misery, with no end in sight.
