On Tuesday, August 20, at the 27th Provincial Council of the Church of Uganda, Equity Bank formally handed over the ownership of the Janani Luwum Church land to the Church of Uganda.
The event was held at the Uganda Christian University in Mukono and was attended by representatives from all dioceses across the province.
The day’s event was presided over by Archbishop Stephen Kazimba Mugaru, who set a solemn tone for the gathering.
After the ceremony, various clergy and delegates were introduced, emphasizing the unity and diversity of the Church in Uganda.
The highlight of the convention was the final loan disbursement for the iconic Janani Luvum Church, a project that has been ongoing for over four decades.
Archbishop Kazimba Mugaru welcomes the guest of honor, John R. Musinguzi, Director General of the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA).
Mr Musinguzi gave an in-depth overview of the development of URA since its inception and stressed the important role taxation plays in the country’s economic development.
In a symbolic move, Equity Bank took the opportunity to formally congratulate the Church of Uganda on this momentous achievement.
The bank held a cake-cutting ceremony to mark the occasion, culminating in the official handover of ownership of the church land.
Elizabeth Mwerinde Kasedde, Executive Director of Equity Bank Uganda, expressed the bank’s passion and commitment to supporting the church’s future endeavors.
“We are very pleased to transfer ownership of the Church House to the Church of Uganda and we look forward to supporting more projects. Thank you so much for working with us,” she said.
Archbishop Kazimba Mugaru in his heartfelt thank you speech expressed deep gratitude to Equity Bank for its important partnership in the church project.
He thanked his predecessors for their contributions, especially Archbishop Emeritus Henry Orombi, who secured a Sh60 billion loan from Equity Bank to make the project possible.
“I want to thank the fathers of the faith who came before me because I am the ninth. The idea came during the time of Archbishop Eric Sabidi and Archbishop Janani Luwum, each of whom made a significant contribution.”
“I want to thank Archbishop Emeritus Henry Olumbi, who contacted Equity Bank and they agreed to give us a loan of Sh60 billion. Thank you very much, now we have the title and we have a building,” Archbishop Kazimba said.
