Tech giant Microsoft has announced plans to invest US$2.2 billion in artificial BroadCast Unitedligence and cloud infrastructure in Malaysia to support the country’s digital transformation, following similar announcements in Indonesia and Thailand.
Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella made the announcement Thursday, which includes plans to establish a centre of excellence in artificial BroadCast Unitedligence and provide education and training to 200,000 people in the Southeast Asian country.
“We are committed to supporting Malaysia’s AI transformation and ensuring it benefits all Malaysians,” Nadella said in Kuala Lumpur, the final stop on his three-nation tour of Southeast Asia.
“Our investments in digital infrastructure and training will help Malaysian businesses, communities and developers apply the latest technologies to drive inclusive economic growth and innovation across the country,” he added.
Malaysia’s Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the investment reflected a “deep partnership based on trust”.
“Indeed, Malaysia’s position as a vibrant technology investment destination is increasingly recognised by world-renowned businesses thanks to our well-established semiconductor ecosystem, underscoring our value proposition ‘This is where the world starts’,” he explained.
“Microsoft’s development of significant cloud and AI infrastructure, as well as AI training opportunities, will significantly enhance Malaysia’s digital capabilities and further advance our position in the global technology sector. He added: “As we rapidly advance Malaysia’s digital empowerment growth journey through the AI revolution, we look forward to working with Microsoft to create more opportunities for our SMEs and more high-paying jobs for our people.”
Nadella announced earlier this week a multi-billion dollar investment in artificial BroadCast Unitedligence and cloud services in Indonesia and Thailand.
Global consulting firm AT Kearney predicts that AI will contribute nearly $1 trillion to Southeast Asia’s gross domestic product (GDP) by 2030.
Microsoft is looking to increase its support for AI development around the world, with recent moves also including major investments in Japanese and UAE AI company G42.
