The Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) won a ton of medals with its strong swimming team at the Micronesian Games.

The events took place in Majuro, Marshall Islands.

The competition is in its sixth day, with softball, volleyball, track and field and basketball games scheduled this week.

A total of 10 islands participated this year, with 1,457 athletes competing for medals.

RNZ Pacific Correspondent Giff Johnson said the Northern Mariana Islands dominated swimming.

“The Northern Marianas swim team is at a very high level and they’ve won a ton of medals in swimming competitions. I mean, they’ve won an incredible amount of medals and their results are amazing.”

The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands currently ranks fourth in the medal standings with 23 gold medals, 13 silver medals and nine bronze medals.

Johnson said Palau also excels in certain specific sports.

“If Palau can win the men’s and women’s beach volleyball gold medals and successfully defend the 2018 Micronesian Games gold medal, then Palauans will undoubtedly be the champions of beach volleyball.

“They beat two different teams from Guam and Nauru to win the gold medal,” he said.

Palau came in third with five gold medals, 28 silver medals and 14 bronze medals.
