Madrid, (Portaltic/EP). – Meta and Universal Music Group (UMG) announce the renewal of a multi-year agreement that extends the use of its music content to platforms such as Messenger, Instagram, Horizon, Facebook, Threads and, for the first time, WhatsApp.
The record label said the new deal “reflects both companies’ shared commitment to protecting creators and artists” and guarantees that artists and songwriters “are paid fairly.”
This means that with the extension of the partnership agreement between Meta and UMG, the two parties will continue to work together to address issues such as artificial intelligence (AI) generating content in an unauthorized manner, “which may affect artists.”
In this sense, they recall that this expansion is part of the strategy developed by the agreement signed by both parties in 2017, when UMG became the first record company to license its recorded music and catalog on the platform then known as Facebook.
Since then, the two companies have been working to develop emerging distribution channels and creative ways to “allow licensed music to thrive across the Meta ecosystem,” namely through Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Meta Horizon.
Therefore, as the announcement states, this new agreement “further expands short-form video monetization opportunities for labels and their artists” and reaches the Meta Threads and WhatsApp platforms.
It is worth remembering that UMG reached another “multidimensional” agreement with TikTok last May, which will allow users of the social network to once again use songs of artists such as Ariana Grande or Harry Styles in their videos.
This happened a few months after the end of the cooperation between the service owned by Bytedance and music labels, which led to the removal of songs by artists such as Taylor Swift or Bad Bunny from the video social network.
