Vardan has signed an agreement with MEST Shipyard for the construction of a new freezer trawler. The vessel will be laid up in the summer of 2026.

This is a vessel that has been delivered and is ready for future needs. The vessel is 44.15 meters long and 11.60 meters wide. The freezer controller is equipped with an advanced Wartsila-25 motor with a power of 2611 HP. This is a motor that burns very little and can be converted to a green solution.

The vessel has been designed by Vardan and MEST in collaboration to ensure the best possible working conditions and fitness for the crew on board. The vessel has a plant solution with one chiller capacity per 40 tonnes/day.

We at Varðan are delighted that the new freezer trawler will be built in the Faroe Islands. “We chose MEST, who have built trawlers before and recently built the new oceanographic research vessel Jákup Sverra, for our new freezer trawler,” says Bogi Jacobsen, Director of Varðan.

Mouritz Mohr was ecstatic to sign the treaty with Vardan today. “This is an important day for us at MEST. We in the Faroe Islands have the opportunity to preserve shipbuilding as a craft, which is important for us as a country. It is great that we can compete with our neighbors”, says MEST Manager Mouritz Mohr.

MEST Shipyard to build new freezer trawler for Varðin

MEST Shipyard has signed a contract to build a new freezer trawler for Faroese fishing company P/F Varðin. The vessel is expected to be delivered in mid-2026.

The vessel is equipped to meet future needs and was designed in close cooperation between the shipowner and the MEST shipyard. This is the 118th new ship of the shipyard and the team has focused on optimizing solutions based on many years of experience. The vessel has an overall length of 44.15 meters and a width of 11.60 meters. The freezer trawler is equipped with an advanced Wartsila-25 engine with a power of 2611HK. This is an engine with very good fuel economy – a future-oriented engine that can easily be converted into a green solution in the future.

The conditions on board are carefully designed to meet the requirements of the crew. The vessel has a refrigeration capacity of 40 tons/day.

“P/F Varðin is very happy that the new trawler will be built in the Faroe Islands. MEST has built many trawlers and recently delivered the new oceanographic research vessel ‘Jákup Sverri’ – so we chose MEST to be in charge of our newest vessel”, says Bogi Jacobsen, CEO of Varðin.

Mouritz Mohr, who signed the contract with Varðin, is very satisfied. “Today is a big day for us at MEST Shipyard. As a seafaring nation, it is very important for us to maintain Faroese shipbuilding technology and craftsmanship. It is especially pleasing that we are competitive compared to our neighbors”, says Mouritz Mohr, CEO of MEST Shipyard.
