Argentina star Lionel Messi will miss Inter Miami’s next two AFL games after injuring his right ankle during Sunday’s Copa America final, his countryman coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino announced on Tuesday.
The 37-year-old former Spanish Barcelona star was injured in the 64th minute of the continental championship final held in the United States. In the end, Albiceleste defeated Colombia 1-0 after extra time to retain the title.
Messi left Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium and sat on the bench, tears streaming down his face as cameras showed his ankle was visibly swollen.
Messi will miss Inter Miami’s home games against Toronto FC on Wednesday and Chicago Fire on Saturday.
“More testing will be done to determine the severity of the situation,” Martino said.
He continued: “He has to do more tests and wait for the results.”
Messi, for his part, posted on Instagram thanking the messages of concern and support he had received following Sunday’s game.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner wrote: “I want to thank everyone for their messages and regards. I’m fine and I hope that soon I will be able to return to the field again and enjoy what I love most.”
Miami Inter has 14 wins, 5 draws and 4 losses in 23 games, ranking second in the Eastern Conference with 47 points, one point behind the leader Cincinnati, which defeated Miami 6-1 on the 6th of this month.
Inter Miami will begin defending its title next week in the League Cup designated for American and Mexican clubs.
