The Dutch men’s field hockey team defeated Germany in a penalty shootout to win its first Olympic gold medal in 24 years.
The game ended 1-1, with Duco Telgenkamp scoring the winning goal in the penalty shootout.
There were tensions during the post-match celebrations, with several Dutch and German players being separated by officials.
The Dutch women will face China in the women’s final on Friday at 8 p.m. as they look to win the double.
However, Femke Boll was disappointed as she only finished third in the 400m hurdles.
The title was won by heavy favorite Sydney McLaughlin-Leveron, who set a new world record with a time of 50.37 seconds, while fellow American Anna Cockrell took silver.
In the 4×400 medley relay, Boll sprinted past three runners to win the gold medal, and the race between her and McLaughlin-Levronie was eagerly anticipated.
After the race, a distraught Boer told broadcaster NOS that she didn’t understand what had happened. “I was in good shape and felt strong, but after 250 metres I just couldn’t hold on,” she said. “I came here to try to do my best and I ended up doing my worst.”
Earlier in the day, swimmer Sharon van Rouwendaal won gold in the 10km open water race in the Seine River.
In 2016, Van Ruwendaal won silver in the event at the Tokyo Olympics and gold at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. She is the first athlete in the history of Olympic open water swimming to win two gold medals.
The Netherlands currently sits eighth in the medal table with 11 gold medals, six silver medals and eight bronze medals.
