Ursula von der Leyen, candidate for President of the European Commission, said in a speech to the European Parliament that Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia had made a choice, they had chosen freedom over oppression, democracy over dependence.
Von der Leyen also stressed that joining the EU is always a process of merit-based admissions.
“We will support the candidates by investing and, wherever possible, reforming them into our legal framework. Accession will always be a merit-based process. We will make sure all countries are ready to join, but strengthening our union is in our main interest and this will be the focus of my Commission. The Western Balkans, Moldova and Georgia have made their free choice, and we must make a firm commitment. Their future will be free, prosperous and with us in the European Union,” – said von der Leyen.
