I would like to thank the Uruguayan executive and legislative bodies for their always objective assessment and attitude on our very sensitive issues. The Chairman of the Armenia-Uruguay Friendship Group Ishkhan Sagatlian met on August 29 with the Speaker of the Uruguayan Chamber of Deputies Ana Oliveira and the Vice Speaker of the Uruguayan Chamber of Deputies Pedro Histoniani, who are on an official visit to Armenia.
Friendship group members Sergey Bagrationyan, Tatvik Gasparyan, Elinal Vardanyan and Armen Gazaryan also attended the meeting.
Ishkhan Sagatlian highly appreciated the friendly relations between Armenia and Uruguay that have existed for decades and noted that there is great potential for developing such relations. In this context, the Chairman of the Friendship Group emphasized the role of the Armenian community in Uruguay, which he believed could serve as an additional bridge and driving force for the development of bilateral relations.
Ana Oliveira, Speaker of the Uruguayan Chamber of Deputies, and Pedro Hisdonian, Vice Speaker of the Uruguayan Chamber of Deputies who is of Armenian descent, spoke highly of the role played by the Armenian community in Uruguayan social and political life, emphasized the unity of the Armenian community, and gave positive comments on the establishment of embassies in both countries.
The Armenian parliamentarian thanked the representative of the first country to officially recognize and condemn the Armenian genocide of April 6, 1965, and spoke about the challenges facing our country and the ongoing aggressive policy of Azerbaijan.
Ishkhan Sagatlian, referring to Azerbaijan’s policy of ethnic cleansing against the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh in 2023, noted that there are dozens of Armenian prisoners of war in Baku prisons and in the Azerbaijani army, and these prisoners are on the sovereign territory of Armenia. “Despite Azerbaijan’s peace statements, it is clear that Azerbaijan is not inclined towards peace and has made new demands on Armenia,” he said.
Emphasize that friendly countries make clear and targeted assessments and take measures to release Armenian prisoners of war through possible channels and means.
Ishkhan Sagatlian specifically pointed out: “If the international community had given a correct and targeted assessment of Azerbaijan’s actions during the 2020 war, it would at least have restrained its further initiatives and actions that have continued since the war.”
The two sides also mentioned other issues of common concern.
