Jakarta(ANTARA) –
House Speaker Puan Maharani announced that the second Indonesia-Pacific Parliamentary Partnership (IPPP) conference will be held from July 24 to 26 and will feature dialogue among Melanesian countries.
IPPP is a forum of parliaments of archipelagos and island nations in the Pacific region initiated by the DPR. Eight speakers and representatives of the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) attended the forum.
The forum aims to provide a diplomatic platform for parliaments of Pacific countries to promote cooperation in common priority areas such as oceans, blue economy, connectivity and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
The second IPPP is also expected to strengthen Indonesia’s Pacific Enhancement Strategy, which aims to enhance Indonesia’s presence in the region through cooperation.
The forum, themed “Partnerships for Prosperity: Fostering Regional Connectivity and Inclusive Development”, is being held in Jakarta and focuses on global issues from the perspective of Pacific Parliaments.
These issues include determining how to combat climate change, promoting sustainable development and tourism, boosting the blue economy, strengthening the role of women and youth, and strengthening friendship and cross-cultural cooperation.
The event will also include a parliamentary dialogue with MSG member states, with parliamentary leaders from Fiji, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea set to attend.
Maharani said several provinces in the eastern region of Indonesia belong to the Pacific Ocean and are also part of the Melanesian Islands, namely East Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, North Maluku and six provinces in Papua.
“Indonesia and the Pacific Community are inextricably linked, both in terms of identity and geographical similarities,” she said in a statement on Wednesday.
Maharani expressed optimism that the forum would enhance unity among Melanesian countries.
