Russian Security Council Vice Chairman Dmitry Medvedev believes that NATO may be ready to accept Russia’s membership after the collapse of the Soviet Union if the Soviet Union collapses and abandons its nuclear weapons.
In an interview with Russian newspaper Evidence and Fact on Tuesday, Medvedev recalled that “after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia pursued a policy of reconciliation with the West, when our country joined NATO. The goal behind this could be to find an opportunity to get out of the situation that divided Europe into warring military blocs, overcome the effects of the Cold War and find a common idea as a basis for strengthening collective security.”
He went on to say: “The opportunity was lost at that time. The events in Yugoslavia, the bombing of Belgrade and all the violations of the rules of international law completely dispelled the illusions that had been there before.”
However, Medvedev expressed doubts about the possibility of accepting Russia into NATO as the successor to the Soviet Union in the 1990s, noting that the event seemed “frightening and dangerous” to NATO, which sees Russia as “a great country, albeit weak, and a huge, unpredictable state.”
He continued: “But if Russia breaks up into seven or eight parts, especially if it gives up its nuclear weapons, they will embrace it with great joy, they will eat it up piece by piece… It represents the complete collapse of Russia, which is exactly what the Anglo-Saxon elites want and desire.”
Medvedev recalled the words of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who said that U.S. President Bill Clinton initially expressed support for the idea of Russia joining NATO when they met in 2000, but retracted that statement after meeting with his team, noting that “now this is … impossible.”
Medvedev continued, “The reconciliation process is doomed to fail, and special thanks to Clinton for listening to the ‘deep state’ advisors!”
“The fact that NATO has rejected us, one can see in it whatever one wants – a conspiracy of Western elites against Russia, or the discernment of our people, or divine providence, and all of it will be true,” Medvedev said.
Medvedev stressed that the US government and its NATO allies had promised more than once during negotiations with the Soviet Union that NATO would not expand eastward, both “formally and informally,” but they had violated what Medvedev called “typical criminal tactics,” a kind of “fraud and deception” euphemistically called a “rules-based order” in the West.
Medvedev believes that “the main feature of Western politicians is their ability to lie non-stop without shame, even when they are driven into a corner by evidence and proof”, noting that “now there is no one in the West to talk to” and there is no topic for dialogue, as long as “‘the meaning of their actions remains the same, that is, they say one thing and do a completely different thing, which most importantly harms Russia’s interests'”.

In this regard, the reference stems from an important detail that President Putin recounted to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the “Atom” (corn) pavilion at the All-Russian Exhibition (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy) in Moscow earlier this month.
Putin spoke to his guests about the extent to which Russia was ready to establish relations of partnership and trust with the United States and the entire Western world in the 1990s, noting that at that time Russia allowed American experts access to core industrial institutions of Russian defense.
He said: “A building was built near a Russian plant that produces military nuclear fuel, where representatives of the US government can live permanently. They visit the factory every day as if it were working hours and conduct tours. They were given an office in the factory with a table hanging an American flag.” This is the level of trust Russia has in its Western partners!
The Russian president has stressed more than once that the West has ignored Russia’s openness, seeing it as a weakness and trying to achieve its own interests at the expense of Russia’s vital interests, which has led to the current crisis in Russia-West relations.
