Hezbollah has said it would stop its attacks if Israel ends its conflict with Hamas in Gaza. According to three Western officials and one Israeli official who spoke to The New York Times, both Israel and Hezbollah have expressed their willingness to begin formal ceasefire negotiations if Israel ends its conflict with Hamas.
Officials said the talks would likely involve the withdrawal of Hezbollah fighters from southern Lebanon and an increase in the deployment of Lebanese military forces in those areas. In addition, the talks would focus on the demarcation of the westernmost part of the border between the two countries.
Even if those talks do not succeed, the goal of launching negotiations could help both sides maintain an informal ceasefire and encourage displaced residents to return home, officials said.
The New York Times reported that despite the retaliatory strikes and public quarrels, Israel and Hezbollah appear to be privately seeking a way to ease the situation without losing face.
An Arab official familiar with Iran’s position said Iran wants a ceasefire in Gaza to protect Hezbollah and believes it could also prompt a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.
