What is maturity?
Maturity is the ability to act like adults both emotionally and psychologically. Not only are mature people comfortable with their emotions, they are also able to express their feelings in healthy and respectful ways and understand the feelings and thoughts of other people.
Signs That You’re Emotionally Mature
- You can easily separate your emotions from your feelings about yourself. It’s easy for you to acknowledge that your feelings have nothing to do with who you are. For example, you may feel sad occasionally, but that doesn’t mean you are a “sad person.”
- You can accept constructive criticism from others. You easily accept feedback from others and recognize it for what it is. When people give you constructive criticism, you don’t take it as a personal attack on your character.
- You can learn how different emotions are created in your body. Maybe you feel a sinking sensation inside before you feel sad, or your face turns red whenever you feel angry. In either case, you are in sync with yourself and understand what different body cues mean.
- You can express your feelings in a healthy way. You don’t bottle up your feelings, but instead let others know what’s on your mind in a respectful and honest way. You’re able to do this without putting the blame on others.
- You are very good at staying calm in different situations. No matter what the situation, you never react by losing your temper. Instead, you usually remain calm in most situations.
- You are responsible for yourself. If your emotions did get the better of you, you’ll humbly and politely acknowledge your behavior. When you apologize, you won’t blame others for your behavior.
- You are always aware of the needs of others. You are very good at recognizing other people’s feelings and are great at checking in to make sure they are okay.
