Lieutenant General Kees Matthijssen entrusted the newspaper with his personal and military experiences and leadership lessons. Today he presented the first copy of “Commander in Four Missions” to Army Lieutenant General Jan Swillens. This took place during the Dutch Veterans Day in The Hague.

Mathieson has been active in the peace and security sector throughout his 42-year career, starting with his draftee career. In this way, he has gained a full understanding of the complexities and dilemmas of the military profession.

Mathiesen led a company in Srebrenica and served as a battalion commander in Iraq. He also led a task force in Afghanistan and was a force commander in Mali. He is the only Dutch soldier to have served as a commander at all levels of deployment.

Srebrenica

At the age of 34, the enclave of Srebrenica fell before him. Among other things, his fight for the rehabilitation of Dutchbat-III veterans led to an apology from Prime Minister Rutte. All Dutchbat-III veterans were eventually awarded the Bronze Medal of Honor.

For his commitment to national (and international) peace and security, Mathieson was awarded the Royal Order of Orange-Nassau as an Officer.

“Commander of Four Missions” is published by Compass Press and is available in bookshops or online for €23.95. ISBN: 9789492107503.
