French railway company SNCF said its high-speed rail network had survived an incident that was intended to paralyse the system, which occurred just hours before the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics.
Several high-speed lines west, north and east of Paris were affected, with congestion at the city’s Montparnasse station. Several flights were cancelled and SNCF warned that the situation could continue throughout the weekend while repairs were carried out.
Fires broke out at three locations on TGV lines west, north and east of Paris, while a fourth fire on the line south to Lyon and the Mediterranean was prevented.
AFP quoted a person familiar with the matter as saying that the attacks were “deliberate sabotage” and that they were “clearly coordinated”. The chairman of the SNCF group told BFMTV media that nearly one million passengers were affected. He added that the network was ready for the Olympics, but they are now mobilizing hundreds of employees to repair the network as quickly as possible.
According to the BBC, a statement from French Railways said that Eurostar services to and from Paris in France have been rerouted and many trains are delayed.
High-speed lines between Paris and Lille are affected, adding 90 minutes to journey times. Several trains have been cancelled, while trains between Paris and London are still running on the “classic” line, but passengers can expect journey times to increase by an hour.
