Mario Joseph Azzopardi has been officially appointed as the first Chairman of the Climate Action Agency (CAA) with the approval of the Public Appointments Commission.

The establishment of the CAA follows Parliament’s recent agreement on its establishing act. The body will coordinate Malta’s national efforts to achieve climate targets, raise awareness of climate change and implement important mitigation and adaptation initiatives.

Azzopardi has served as chairman of the Malta Resources Authority (MRA) for more than a decade. “During his tenure, Mr Azzopardi emphasised the strategic use of statistics as an important tool for climate action,” the government statement said.

“He stressed that as awareness of the impacts of climate change has begun to grow, the obligations and complexity of the reporting required have accelerated.”

Azzopardi currently serves as Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Malta Air Traffic Services Ltd. Azzopardi’s academic qualifications include an Honours Degree in Accounting and a Masters in Financial Services from the University of Malta.

He started his career in accounting and public audit with a leading audit firm and later held various positions with water companies and Energy of Malta. In 2013 he was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Energy and Water Services Regulator.
