Dominican Mariledi Paolino, pair Olympic medalist, qualified for the second round of the 400m sprint at the 2024 Paris Olympics in athletics.
Paulino clocked a time of 49.42 and reached the finish line almost alone.
Marileidy Paulino, 27, trained by Cuban Yaseen Pérez, won the fifth round in 49.42, more than a second ahead of American Aaliyah Butler, who also advanced.
The Dominicans set the fastest time of all competitors in the first qualifying round, including Cuban Roxana Gomez (50.38) and Mexican Paula Moran (51.04).
Marileidy Paulino, the flag bearer of the Dominican Republic at the opening ceremony, came to Paris with two goals: to win the 400m gold medal and to improve her personal best (she has held 48.76 since the 2023 World Championships in Budapest).
The double world champion’s next match will be the semi-final next Wednesday, while the final will be held on August 9.
The 27-year-old Paulino, also known as the 400m queen, will try to improve on her performance at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, when she won silver medals in the women’s 400m and the mixed 4x400m relay with Lidio Andres Feliz, Anabel Medina and Alexandre Ogando.
