American singer Mariah Carey announced on the same day that her mother Patricia (87 years old) and sister Alison (63 years old) had passed away, but did not disclose the details of the death.
“My heart is broken as I lost my mother last weekend and my sister also lost her life on the same day in a tragic incident,” the singer, 55, said in a statement to US magazine People.
She went on to say she was grateful to have spent her mother’s final week before she passed away, adding: “I thank everyone for their love, support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”
The Grammy Award-winning American singer did not reveal the cause of death for any of his family members.
A relationship full of contradictions
Mariah Carey’s relationship with her mother Patricia has had many ups and downs, as her parents separated when she was three and her father, Alfred Roy Carey, died in 2002 from a rare form of cancer.
Mariah dedicated her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, to her relationship with her mother, which she described as causing her a lot of pain and confusion, despite their strained relationship. Because of this relationship, Mariah Carey included her mother’s name in the book’s opening dedication. She wrote: “To my mother Pat (Patricia), despite all that, I think she did the best she could. I will always love you as much as I can.”
She said her and Patricia’s journey was full of contradictions and not black and white, describing their relationship as a full rainbow.
Maria continues in the book: “Our relationship was a thorny rope of pride, pain, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment. A complicated love bound my heart to my mother’s.”
Carrie does not deny the influence of her mother, an opera singer, on her musical tastes and love of singing, which also influenced their later relationship, saying in her memoir: “There was a clear shift: She made me feel competitive, like a threat, and a different bond emerged, a rope, “which bound us together by a shared biology and social commitment.”
Elsewhere, she said: “Having someone you love be jealous of you on a professional level is one of those things that goes along with success, but it’s especially painful when that person is your mother and the feeling manifests itself at such a young age.”
Despite the ups and downs in their lives, Mariah maintained her relationship with her mother. In 2010, they came together for ABC’s “Mariah Carey: Wish You a Merry Christmas” special and performed a duet for the special celebrating her mother.
