American singer Mariah Carey has announced that her mother Patricia and sister Alison died within a day of each other, the BBC reports.
“My heart is broken; I lost my mother last weekend. Unfortunately, my sister also passed away on the same day,” the singer said.
Kelly did not reveal the cause of death of her mother, 87, and sister, 63. Kelly admitted that her relationship with her mother and sister was very strained.
Patricia was an opera singer and voice teacher. In his 2020 memoir, Carey wrote that he and his mother were professionally competitive. “But when my mother showed jealousy, it caused great pain,” he wrote.
The singer said her sister, Alison, had no contact with her and her brother, Morgan. “It was safer for me emotionally and physically to have no contact with them,” he wrote in his memoir.
After the book was published, Alison sued Carey for $1.2 million for “incredible emotional distress.” Carey called the memories “revenge.”
Carey’s father, Alfred, died of cancer in 2002 at the age of 72.
