Waagacusub.net – Several people were killed and many others injured when mortar shells hit targets near the Somali presidential palace on Wednesday, local officials confirmed.

At least five mortar shells hit the former German embassy and health ministry headquarters, as well as the notorious Gilyov prison, where critics of the outgoing president and terror suspects are held and often tortured.

Al-Qaeda-affiliated militant group al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it struck high-profile targets, including the office where a senior official was located at the time of the strike.

One of the shells that missed its target reportedly landed in a residential area in the Vodigli district, killing two people and injuring several others.

Somalia’s federal government, which has been under pressure to revoke an extension of President Farmajo’s term, has not yet commented on the mortar attack, the latest in a series of attacks by Islamist militants that have deepened the country’s political crisis since parliament voted last week to extend the president’s term by two years.
