Meat seller Bintou Sangaré explained her difficulties. “It’s really not good. There are no customers. We find ourselves in a very difficult situation, so to speak. Stopping mining does not bring us any benefits. The way we present our goods is the way we pick them up at night. Really, it would be good if the authorities could help us a little bit,” said Mr. Sangaré.
The same is true for Sata Bayo, who sells various goods. “The situation in Mandyanā is difficult at the moment. Everything is at a standstill. I take things from the big market and resell them to the gold miners. The little money I earn is enough to cover my family’s expenses. So the cessation of mining has affected all activities here,” lamented Sata Bayo.
For taxi drivers, customers simply disappear. This is how Mamoudou Sangaré explains. “We really don’t know what to do. We don’t even make 100,000 GNF a day. It would be very good if the government could look at our affairs differently…”
