A man has admitted stealing nearly €3,400 worth of Pokémon cards in a novel take on the series’ famous “gotta catch ’em all” slogan.
Joar Are Lyngas, a 35-year-old Norwegian man who works as a freelance content writer, was arraigned by District Judge Elaine Rizzo on Friday, accused of stealing several boxes of playing cards from a store in San Gwann.
He pleaded guilty to grand theft, grand theft and knowingly participating in the trafficking of stolen property.
The sheriff warned Lingas at the time that aggravated burglary carries a prison sentence of between 13 months and seven years.
But after consulting his lawyer, Julia Micallef Stafrace, the man confirmed his guilty plea.
In his brief on punishment, prosecutor Nicholas Gaetano of the Attorney General’s Office asked the court to impose a protection order in addition to the punishment, prohibiting the man from returning to the store involved.
Lingas was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for four years, and ordered to repay the value of the stolen items within six months. The court also issued a protection order Lingas applied for, which will be valid for 12 months.
