Speaking to Malta Today sister newspaper Malta Today, Martin Balzan, president of the Malta Medical Association (MAM), warned that the public health system would come under enormous pressure. today.

Barzun noted that about 800 patients are waiting for treatment because now one patient has to wait all night to receive treatment so that another can go home early.

He blamed a shortage of beds for the situation, which has led to long queues in Mater Dei hospital corridors and an overcrowded emergency room.

Barzun pointed out that the government has not prioritized health care and harshly criticized the 11-year stagnation of the public health system due to the Vitals franchise fraud.

On Sunday, Malta Today also reported that the situation at Our Lady Church was dire, and the increase in Covid patients had made the situation worse.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health said in comments to Malta Today that it had directed “significant changes” to the assessment and flow of patients attending the emergency department at Mater Dei Hospital in order to reduce waiting times.

The Department of Health said: “These will be based on first contact with a decision-making expert who has the skills to provide appropriate care to patients professionally and promptly, as well as providing care for urgent patients in accordance with the designated consultant model.”

But the government will also seek to work with the private sector to ease pressure on Mater Dei Hospital’s emergency department.
