Maltese actress Lara Azzopardi has criticised film director Johann Grech for prioritising foreign filmmakers and artists over local ones.

Gretsch recently made headlines again when he starred in a 10-minute film starring British actor David Walliams and Gretsch himself. The “film” cost €500,000 to make.

Azzopardi slammed Grech’s antics in a Facebook post on Sunday, calling it “disrespectful to truly talented people in Malta”. She pointed out that professionals in the local film industry were being told that there was no funding for their work.

The Malta Film Commission has clarified that it will no longer bear responsibilities related to the funding of local films and will focus on its “primary goal”, which is to promote Malta and attract foreign film investment.

Azzopardi even claimed that, speaking of her own experience while working on the commission, her salary had been docked for no apparent reason.

The ‘Cha Kufa’ actress also spoke about her experience working with Grech himself, who she said was a “bully” to her and other women.

Azzopardi concluded that Grech’s abuse was spreading “across the country.”
