Malian singer Rokia Traoré was arrested in Italy on Saturday 22 June on a European arrest warrant.
Upon arriving in Italy, Rogia Traore was arrested by Italian Carabinieri during a border check. They quickly discovered that she was the subject of a European Arrest Warrant and arrested her.
According to media sources, the arrest is related to a conflict with her ex-partner Jan Goosens over the custody of their minor daughter, who lives with her mother in Mali. Rokia Traoré has been charged by Belgian judicial authorities with “kidnapping, detention and hostage-taking”.
The singer appealed after a Belgian judge criticised her for not respecting a court ruling awarding sole custody of her daughter to her Belgian father.
