The Malian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it had summoned the Swedish ambassador to Bamako and instructed him not to stay for more than 72 hours due to statements made by Swedish Minister Johan Fussell that threatened good relations.
After Mali announced it was severing ties with Ukraine, Forssell said on the X website, “You cannot support Russia’s provocative war in Ukraine to end and continue to receive hundreds of millions of dollars in aid every year as development support.”
A spokesman for Minister Forssell announced on Friday, August 9, 2024, that the decision to stop providing development aid to Mali had been made, and said it would be implemented in December 2024, but that the aid was linked to charitable activities in Mali and would continue.
In June 2024, due to the serious insecurity in Mali, Sweden announced that it would close its embassy in Bamako from the end of 2024, but would continue to operate in Mali through its embassy in Dakar, Senegal.
Although Mali still has low security problems due to terrorist organizations affiliated with al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (ISIS) and the military regime after the 2020 coup, Mali aims to get the situation back on track. But unpleasantly, Swedish troops are also part of the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali in 2022, but Sweden announced that it hopes to withdraw 220 soldiers from Mali until the last soldier returns home. The Swedish side said that the country will continue to cooperate with Mali.
A recent statement from the Swedish military said that “the situation in the country has changed in recent years, but until our last soldier arrives in the country, we will continue operations in Mali as usual.”
In addition to Sweden, other countries on the European continent have completed the transfer of troops from the peacekeeping mission in Mali, including France.
Al Jazeera reported that Mali stopped cooperating with the French army and other international forces to maintain peace after it began working closely with Russia and Russian mercenary organizations operating in Mali in 2021.
