Mali declares a state of national disaster

Bamako, August 24 (Xinhua) — The transitional government of Mali issued a statement on the 24th saying that due to floods caused by heavy rainfall in recent days, the country has suffered floods and the transitional government of Mali has declared a “state of national disaster.”

The statement said that since the start of the rainy season in June, about 7,077 households across the country have been affected by floods, leaving 47,374 people displaced or affected.

According to an order issued at the end of an extraordinary cabinet meeting on Friday, transitional President Assimi Goita decided to provide the government with a total of 4 billion CFA francs (about 6.8 million US dollars) to deal with the “natural disaster.”

Minister of Security and Civil Protection Dawood Ali Mohameddin told the press that the national state of disaster was “a very important decision” that allows “the mobilization of all the resources of the state to provide assistance and protection to all those facing various disasters.”
