BAMAKO, 24th August, 2024 (WAM) — Mali on Friday declared a national state of disaster following floods that have killed 30 people and affected more than 47,000 people since the start of the rainy season, the Malian Council of Ministers said in a statement.

According to Reuters, in most years, West Africa and Central Africa experience varying degrees of flooding between June and September as rains sweep across the Sahel countries on the southern edge of the Sahara Desert.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said in mid-August that flooding has affected more than 716,000 people in the region so far this season, and cumulative rainfall is expected to be above average.
