Stolac – The “Slovokku” cultural festival will be held for the 53rd time in Stolac from July 26 to 28, with participants coming from Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Croatia, Macedonia, Germany, Poland, Serbia and Switzerland.
The festival program is rich in content, covering cultural fields such as literature, poetry, music, fine arts, drama, and film.
“The idea of the ‘Slovo Gorčina’ cultural festival originated from Mako Dizdar, who in his later years had the idea to bring the best of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s culture and art to the world. Today, guided by this philosophy and following this goal, we gather all the best that this region creates”, declared the festival organizers.
They added that their goal is to present Stolak as a unique city and work on promoting important sites, first and foremost the cemetery of Sterchaks in Ramile, as places for the maintenance of tradition.
“In recent years, the festival has undergone a real renaissance in terms of programming and organization. I think we can safely say that this year’s program is the most ambitious yet, including the pre-war period when The Bitter Letter enjoyed great fame. With the full support of the political structures of the time, the festival has grown into a wonderful cultural event of regional and even European scope, and all this in a unique way, in line with long-standing dreams and aspirations. He reminded that the festival is named after one of the most important characters in the song of the same name from the cult album Stone Sleepers by Mako Dizdar.
“The festival has made Stolac a cultural centre not only for our country, but also for the region. This year’s program clearly confirms this. Artists from nine countries will gather for three days under the sky of Stolac to realize the poetic dream of Mako among the Russian people. Stych. This gathering once again confirms the importance of reminding the cultural-historical heritage, art and its priceless value, as they are the basis of the identity of every country and people”, explains Dubravko Barbarić, a member of the organizing team of the festival.
The festival “Slovo Gorčina” has been held since 1971, the first edition of which was organized immediately after the death of the poet Mako Dizdar.
“The festival is enriched with educational, literary and artistic programs, with participants from Bosnia and Herzegovina and abroad. It creates a colorful mix of generations in the atmosphere of the small town of Bregava, which is very important for students: students have the opportunity to meet experts from the cultural world,” said Najda Rifatbegović, a member of the organizing team.
The first day of the festival kicks off at the Stećac Radimlje cemetery with a musical stage show by composer Belma Bešlić Gál titled “Iza uma” starting at 8pm.
“This is an intermediary musical performance designed for the Ramile cemetery, covering the entire area. The historical context, the location, the language, the music, the lights, the silence, even the ambient sounds of the environment and the presence of the audience are integral elements of this artistic concept, which is based on several songs by Mako Dizdar,” the organizers announced.
After that, it is planned to announce the three best young poets who will receive the “Mak Dizdar” award for the best unpublished poetry collection.
“The audience will have the opportunity to take part in the poetic part of the program, where the guest poet Marko Tomas will perform, and the dialogue will be moderated by Tomislav Burlec. At the end of the evening, festival participants and attendees will enjoy a concert in which the Ubuntu Trio will perform. Otherwise, this will not be the only musical event, the pioneer of national rock music, the real Macedonian band “Mizar” will perform among the stone pillows at the Stećak cemetery. They added that in the coming days, winners of last year’s “Mak Dizdar” award will be awarded, as well as programs dedicated to important local and regional writers, Bosnian poet Bisela Alikadic, Serbian poet Dragana Mladenovic, Montenegrin-Bosnian writer Andrej Nikolaidis and Macedonian writer Tihomir Jančovska.
“The edition of the History of Bosnia and Herzegovina by the UNSA Institute of History will also be promoted, as well as the edition of the Oral Practice by the author Jasminka Šipka. This year, the organizers of the group of Bosnian painting veterans Safet Zec and promising artists “Slova Gorčina” announced that Ira Skopljak Viteškić of the younger generation will exhibit their works, while the third exhibition is dedicated to the great Bosnian architect Zlatko Ugljen.
Another area of focus at this year’s festival is “In Memoriam,” programming dedicated to significant artists who have passed away in the past year.
“In addition to Marko Vešović and Hadžem Hajdarević, academician Abdulah Sidran has also passed away. Actor Emir Hadžihafizbegović will bring him back to life with a recital “Sidranov’s Dream” at the cemetery in Radimlje stećak. In addition, in collaboration with the actors, Jovica Letić from the Mostar Youth Theatre will give a poetic performance from a distance.
