Strategies for building resilient agricultural systems in semi-arid areas of West and Central Africa
At a workshop in Nigeria, stakeholders reviewed, integrated and mapped out pathways to sustain resilience in agricultural systems across different agro-ecologies in semi-arid West and Central Africa.
The presentation discussed the function and integration of resilience drivers and components of effective technology packaging and delivery, with the overall goal of increasing yields and productivity in agricultural systems.
The discussion provided pathways for prioritizing research outreach, policy, and funding options to achieve large-scale impact across the region. The following trends and research gaps emerged from the discussion:
- Growing demand for crop and livestock products in the Western Caribbean
- With the increase in per capita income and rapid urbanization, people’s diets and preferences have changed, leading to changes in the structure of food demand.
- Price fluctuations of major agricultural products and natural resources and agricultural product marketing
- Challenges of managing pastoralism and addressing conflicts between herders and farmers
- Climate change is a major issue affecting agricultural production and achieving food security
- Insufficient synergies between research and policy and low participation of women and youth in agricultural extension limit the delivery of services to women in key value chains.
