A 35-year-old man, identified as Okumu, hanged himself in Agbara, Magwe County, Eastern Equatoria State, on Sunday.

According to sources, the tragedy occurred because the family of the deceased held a meeting and accused him of being a member of the Illuminati and sacrificing family members for personal growth and wealth.

According to Encyclopedia Britannica, the name Illuminati has been in use since the 15th century, adopted or applied by various people who claim to be enlightened. The word is the plural form of the Latin illuminatus (“enlightenment” or “enlightenment”). However, over the years, it has become associated with several conspiracy theories.

Iwire Payam tribal chief Angelo Benard Badi told Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday that Okumu’s body was found hanging from a rope on Sunday morning.

“The incident happened when the deceased was having a conflict with his family members over a domestic issue. There was a disease in the family that haunted them like a ghost,” he explained. “After the issue was resolved, they all scattered in their rooms and the next day, when all the family members woke up, they found that the man had hanged himself with a rope. I don’t know his baptismal name but he is popularly known as Okumu, 35.”

Magwe County Chief Superintendent of Police Colonel Paulino Locket Iyaka said there was no clear evidence to justify charges against the deceased and they were investigating the family of the deceased and would hold them accountable.

“The deceased attended a family meeting and when they discussed and resolved the issue that night, he entered his room and the family found him hanging. The family reported the case to the police,” he said. “You know, money is needed in today’s world and the family accused their son of joining the Illuminati or underwater forces, which forced the boy to hang himself. According to the family, the deceased sacrificed most of their dead members. The deceased hanged himself because of them and the law will hold them responsible.”

Colonel Lockett added: “What evidence do the deceased’s family have to prove that the deceased was a member of the Illuminati? We need evidence and the police will also investigate because civilians should not accuse others without evidence.”

Meanwhile, local civil society activist, Charles Okullu, Executive Director of Peace Link Foundation, condemned the family for accusing themselves without evidence and urged the government to hold them accountable.
