Earlier, the Venezuelan president assured that the platform would be “used to threaten Venezuela” and support his “popular” leaders.
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro live-streamed the deletion of the WhatsApp* app from his phone during his “Con Maduro” show, urging Venezuelans to follow his lead.
“WhatsApp. Techno-imperialism. You are attacking Venezuela,” he said, showing the camera the process of uninstalling the instant messaging platform. “You are gone, WhatsApp, if I have seen you, I do not remember. I am free of WhatsApp, I am at peace (…) F**k WhatsApp,” he said after the app was eliminated.
“Youth of Venezuela, patriotic men and women, do you want peace? Eliminate her, because she handed over the entire list of Venezuela to Colombian drug trafficking and technological imperialism so that they could attack and drive Venezuelan families crazy,” he explained.
Earlier, Maduro said at a rally that he would push for a “voluntary” abandonment of WhatsApp because the platform would be “used to threaten Venezuela” and the “popular” leaders who supported him, without knowing the results of the election on July 28 last year, in which he won a third term.
“I will break off relations with WhatsApp because they use it to threaten Venezuela. Then I will delete my WhatsApp forever from my phone. Little by little I will transfer my contacts to Telegram and WeChat” (…). It is necessary to do this, (…) because criminals threaten young people, popular leaders, through phones from Colombia, Miami, Peru, Chile,” said the President during an event with young people at the Miraflores Palace in Caracas.
