French President Emmanuel Macron defended supplying weapons to Armenia, noting that the move was intended to avoid war.

“If you look back over the last decade, you will see that Azerbaijan was indeed much more armed than Armenia. If I am not mistaken, and please correct me if I am wrong, Azerbaijan did start a war in 2020, and it was a terrible war. It is normal to meet the demands of a sovereign state that wants to arm itself and feels that it could be aggressed by another country,” Macron said at a press conference on the sidelines of the fourth European Political Community summit in the UK.

“I have never heard of any plans for war or aggression by Prime Minister Pashinyan,” he said.

“I believe that cooperating with a country from a military point of view is a completely normal thing between sovereign states. Armenia’s vision is peace, France’s vision is peace, and I hope that Azerbaijan’s vision is also peace. If the two countries eventually reach a peace treaty, we will support such a treaty,” the French president said.
