Caracas – Opposition Leader VenezuelaMaria Corina Machado on Tuesday thanked Costa Rica for granting her and majority opposition presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia political asylum but pledged that she would continue to fight “side by side with the people.”
“I thank the Costa Rican government for its generous hospitality in the face of the (Nicolas) Maduro regime’s brutal repression of citizens who defended the results of the July 28 presidential election,” the former deputy wrote in X.
However, he noted that his priority was to “protect” the six collaborators who had taken refuge in the residence of the Argentine Embassy in Caracas since March and that his “duty is to continue to fight alongside the people.”

“From Venezuela, thank you, my dear people and the government of Costa Rica,” Machado reiterated, refusing to accept the official results of Sunday’s election, according to which President Nicolás Maduro won with 51.2% of the vote, compared to 44.2% for González Urrutia, the flagbearer of the largest opposition bloc, the Democratic Unity Platform (PUD).
The Costa Rican government granted political asylum to the two opposition figures on Tuesday after learning of “arrests, arrests and warrants” against them, but Venezuelan authorities have not yet confirmed the news, although they have called the two opposition leaders “criminals.”
In a video message, Costa Rican Foreign Minister Arnoldo André offered the advice to “all those who suffer political persecution in Venezuela, especially those who have taken refuge in the Argentine Embassy in Caracas.”

The gap between Maduro and González Urrutia was 704,114 votes, according to the National Electoral Council (CNE), which declared the ruling party the winner with 20% of the time left, or 2 seconds. The fate of a million ballots is unknown, as 100% of the results have not yet been reviewed.
The Unified Democratic Party, as well as several presidential candidates, non-governmental organizations, businessmen and a large part of the international community have demanded the release of all minutes of the meeting, which, according to Machado, gave González Urrutia a huge victory.
