MOGADISHU (HOL) – Ma’awishli militia has recaptured six strategic locations in the Hargan district of the Hiran region from Al-Shabaab, officials confirmed on Sunday.
The operation targeted key hideouts that Al Shabaab had secretly established along the banks of the Shabelle River, which are integral to Al Shabaab’s operations in the area. As the militia advanced, the fighters reportedly fled across the Shabelle River, abandoning their defensive positions, which are now under the control of Mavisli. An official from the Mavisli militia described the operation as an important step in weakening Al Shabaab’s control over the area. “We had intelligence that Al Shabaab fighters were regrouping along the river bank. When they realized we were approaching, they fled and our forces have recaptured the positions they left behind,” the official said.
The operation is part of an operation led by the Somali National Army and local militias to liberate West Hiran from the control of Al-Shabaab. The final phase of the offensive is reportedly being prepared to eliminate the remaining militant strongholds in the area.
Retaking these strategic positions is expected to disrupt al-Shabaab’s ability to operate in Hiraan by cutting off its access to the vital supply route of the Shabelle River. The success of the operation is seen as a key development in the broader struggle for peace and stability in Somalia.
