The first large-scale adoption of artificial intelligence for domestic screening in the Middle East marks the latest milestone for Lunit amidst the rapid expansion of cancer screening initiatives around the world.
SEOUL, South Korea, July 22, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Lunit, a leading provider of AI-powered cancer diagnostic and treatment solutions, today announced the implementation of its AI-powered breast cancer screening solution, Lunit INSIGHT MMG Breast Cancer Screening Program, in the country of Qatar. This marks the first time in the Middle East that AI has been adopted in a nationwide breast cancer screening workflow. The partnership, initially planned for five years, demonstrates Qatar’s long-term commitment to advancing breast cancer screening.
Qatar Primary Health Care Company (PHCC) has integrated Lunit INSIGHT MMG into its Screen for Life programme, the country’s national breast and bowel cancer screening programme, starting in June 2024. The AI solution aims to improve early detection of breast cancer, potentially reducing missed diagnoses and increasing survival rates in Qatar’s triennial screening programme.
Dr. Sheikha Abu Sheikha, Director of the Early Detection Program at PHCC, said: “Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Qatar, accounting for 32% of all female cancer cases(1). To address this, we are integrating Lunit AI as a secondary critical opinion to radiologists. As the first country in the Middle East to implement AI throughout its screening program, we are strengthening Qatar’s commitment to providing high-quality healthcare to women across the country.”
The implementation follows a successful retrospective validation phase that began in March 2023. Satisfied with the performance and added value, both radiologists now read each mammogram simultaneously with the Lunit INSIGHT MMG results, thus increasing the accuracy and efficiency of the screening process.
Lunit’s success in Qatar is part of a broader trend of the company expanding into business-to-government (B2G) cancer screening programs around the world. Recent notable deployments include:
Australia: Breast Screening Centres in New South Wales
Sweden: Delivery of Lunit INSIGHT MMG to Capio S:t Göran Hospital marks the first time AI has replaced human readers in breast cancer detection
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: Lunit INSIGHT Suite for Seha Virtual Hospital, connecting over 150 hospitals
Iceland: Implementing Lunit INSIGHT MMG for nationwide breast cancer screening, the first European country to deploy AI for all citizens
“Our collaboration with PHCC Qatar for Screening for Life will provide healthcare providers with powerful new tools to improve medical diagnostics,” said Brandon Suh, CEO of Lunit. “As we expand to national screening programs around the world, we are improving early cancer detection and reinventing preventive care. Each implementation brings us closer to our vision of making AI-assisted cancer detection more accurate and accessible to people around the world, wherever they are in the world.”
The Screening for Life programme, implemented by Qatar PHCC, is a national initiative that provides free breast and bowel cancer screening to eligible residents. This cornerstone of Qatar’s public health strategy aims to promote early detection through education, awareness and accessible screening services.
