Paris – Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique Martínez refused on Thursday to talk about the possibility of renewing his contract with the club, a hypothetical that he plans to do with the entity in the French capital.
«I have nothing to say about it. I am not interested at all (…) There is nothing to speculate, nothing to talk about. “I am focused on the next game,” the Spanish coach said simply in a press conference ahead of tomorrow’s league match between Paris and Montpellier.
In recent days, the Parisian media began to discuss the renewal of Luis Enrique, who signed in July 2023 for two seasons, and the club management wanted to renew his contract after the excellent performances of his first season: League title, Cup title and Super Cup, Champions League semi-finals.
The Paris coach admitted that the club will continue to explore the market, especially in the search for an attacker following the injury to Portuguese Gonzalo Ramos, who underwent surgery on his right ankle last Tuesday and will be out for at least three months.
However, Luis Enrique made it clear that acquiring reinforcements would be “very difficult”, both because they would have to improve the quality of the current players and because of the price.
“When a big team like Paris Saint-Germain buys a washing machine, it doesn’t cost four, it costs 400,” he explained. That’s why he said there was “no sense of urgency, I repeat, no” because the team had already received reinforcements “on every front”.
Various media reports suggest that Atalanta’s Nigerian striker Ademola Lookman will be the focus in Paris.
Luis Enrique believes they already have “a good market” and that although “we are open to the extent of progress”, the “prices are normal”. “If no more players come, I’m happy,” he insisted.
He also said he was pleased with the addition this week of Desiré Doué from Rennes, who won a silver medal with France at the recent Paris Olympics.
“He’s a very complete player who will help us a lot. It’s a big step up,” he said.
Looking ahead to tomorrow’s game, he did not specify whether to bet on a pure striker to replace Ramos or go for a false nine like Asensio or Lee Kang-in. “We adapt perfectly to both situations,” he said.
“I like to have a lot of players who can change positions at any time and play well. It’s not so easy to play well in many positions anymore,” he stressed. Efei
