Over the weekend, youths in Ruyipayam, Mundri East County, Western Equatoria State, wrote a letter protesting against the downsizing of services and layoffs of staff at Ruyi Hospital.
At the end of last month, the Italian medical organization “Doctors in Africa” CUAMM handed over the Rui Hospital to the National Non-Governmental Organization (NNGO) Peace and Education Development Support Program (SPEDP), which began operating the hospital from July 1.
The new organization reduced staff numbers from 141 to 73, resulting in a significant loss of staff. The community now says the remaining staff are insufficient to meet their needs.
In the letter seen by Radio Tamazuj, the youths stressed that the eye clinic, tuberculosis unit, sleeping sickness unit, outpatient clinic and injection room among others have ceased operations.
“The youths pointed out that they will not allow SPEDP to only handle emergencies at the hospital. Let them provide the above full range of services to the entire community. We are not against any NGO, but if the services are not available, we will react or take action,” the letter read in part. “As youths, we want to see all the staff left behind by CUAMM reinstated. Therefore, we give them 48 hours to leave the hospital if they fail to meet the above conditions immediately from the date of this letter.”
We tried to contact the hospital management but to no avail.
Last week, the Mondri East community commissioner warned young people in the area not to disrupt Lui Hospital.
