Miami.- A law in the southeastern U.S. state of Louisiana went into effect Thursday that allows judges to surgically castrate convicted pedophiles, a first in the country’s history.
However, Louisiana is the first state to give judges the discretion to surgically castrate inmates convicted of serious sex crimes against minors under 13, joining California, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Alabama, Montana, Oregon, Texas and Wisconsin, among other states that have adopted similar chemical castration measures.
“At the end of the day, I want kids to know that they’ll feel safer because when someone violates their innocence, they’re going to be punished very severely,” the bill’s author, Democratic Sen. Regina Barrow, said today, according to the channel. WAFB9.
However, in some cases, a person convicted of a crime may not be eligible for the procedure, depending on the judge and doctors at the state Department of Corrections.
Chemical castration uses drugs that block testosterone production to reduce libido, while surgical castration is a more invasive procedure that involves removing both testicles.
Senator Barrow said she ultimately hoped the new law would at least act as a “deterrent to potential child rapists”.
More than a dozen U.S. states are considering chemical castration for pedophiles or others convicted of sex crimes.
In 1996, California became the first state to approve chemical castration for pedophiles. Certain sex crimes involving children 13 or younger, such as rape or sodomy.
