The two shared Strike Four’s $500,000 purse, with each receiving $250,000.

The tickets were purchased through MyLotto by players from Christchurch and Auckland.

In June, the record-breaking $50 million Powerball jackpot was shared by seven people, who each received $7.1 million.

Tonight’s jackpot matches the $44.06 million won by an Oakland couple in 2016.

Besides not having a heart attack, the couple said their “best advice” for future winners is to remember to eat and sleep during the first two weeks.

“It’s easy to forget the little things in the first few days after winning a big prize.”

Another couple, who shared a $50 million jackpot in 2020, decided it was important to find the right person to talk to.

“Keep your circle small, but make sure you share the news with others. You’ll need the support of at least one person to get through the first few weeks.

“For me, it’s very important that I can talk to people and exchange ideas and keep myself informed about the whole thing.”

Seeking reliable advice from close family and friends, as well as financial advisers and lawyers, was key advice provided by Hawke’s Bay winners.

More than 280 people have won the Powerball jackpot since the lottery began in 1987.

New Zealand Lotto chief executive Jason Delamore said every draw generated profits that supported community organisations and charities across the country.

“Lotto NZ exists to raise vital funds for New Zealand communities – it’s the driving purpose of our organisation – and we’ve returned more than $6 billion to communities since Lotto launched,” he said.

The biggest wins of 2024 so far

The biggest jackpot for 2024 was decided on June 8, with seven winners sharing the $50 million must-win prize, with each receiving $7.18 million.

Although two of the winners received the first prize the next day, The final winner came on stage to receive his share of the prize money.

One of the children of the winning couple, who wished to remain anonymous, said the family held a meeting to share the good news.

“They’ve been slowly doing some renovations on the house and now they’re able to finish it,” the child said of the award-winning parents.

“We really want them to be able to do something for themselves, though. They’ve been talking about a special trip overseas and now they can do it. It’s going to be great for them,” said another child.

What to do if you win

If ticket holders purchase their tickets through MyLotto, they will know immediately if they have won a prize. Prizes of $1,000 or less will be automatically credited to their account.

For prizes over $1,000, winners must complete an online prize form.

Winners with physical lottery tickets must still visit a Lotto retailer to claim their prize.

To win the Powerball jackpot, the ticket holder must correctly guess all six Lotto numbers plus the added Powerball number.
