The 1992 Air New Zealand Suva Hibiscus Carnival was an unprecedented success, raising a record $187,006.13.
This extraordinary feat was Fiji Times Monday, August 24th of that year.
The article chronicled the crowning of Miss Fiji National Bank, Setaitata Tamanikaiyaroi as Miss Charity and noted that she raised an impressive $53,313.
The carnival presented a vibrant parade of floats that attracted thousands of spectators to the streets of Suva on Saturday afternoon.
Competitors dressed in bright summer attire as temperatures soared into the mid-30s, and for the first time in years the competition enjoyed good weather conditions throughout the week.
The climax of the carnival takes place in Albert Park on Saturday night, where the traditional coronation ceremony takes place.
In stark contrast to last year’s rainy weather, thousands of people gathered to witness the event.
The contestants made an impression in stunning full-length evening gowns in shades of emerald green, purple, black, lavender and peach.
There was a memorable moment on the night when Miss Reserve Bank of Fiji Elisapeci Kubuabola was crowned Miss Hibiscus 1992 by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.
An emotional 21-year-old science student from the University of Otago in New Zealand, Kubuambola, expressed her surprise and gratitude, and thanked her sponsors, family and other competitors.
The first runner-up was Miss Fiji National Provident Fund, 31-year-old lawyer Salote Kaimacuata, and the second runner-up was Miss Colonial Mutual Life, 22-year-old customer welfare officer Sanya Gain.
Miss Kemaquata and Miss Gain were praised throughout the competition for their composure and charm.
Besides crowning Miss Charity, the event also crowned Yvonne Joseph as Miss Bank of Baroda, who came second in the amount of money raised for charity.
After the coronation ceremony, Ms. Kubuambolla, dressed in a striking black velvet gown with white puff sleeves, greeted the crowd and interacted with the public.
The carnival also features exciting travel opportunities courtesy of Air New Zealand.
“Miss Hibiscus” received a trip to Los Angeles, while “Miss Charity” received a trip to Honolulu.
The two queens each received two tickets and $500 in spending money.
In addition, Air New Zealand provided round-trip flights to Auckland for the charity runner-up.
Suva Mayor Seni Buadromo encouraged everyone to maintain the carnival spirit of unity ahead of next year’s event.
The evening concluded with the winners and contestants being escorted by soldiers from the Fiji Army, celebrating a week of camaraderie and community spirit.
